Book five of the 51 series.
Cat Dyatlov was sitting at her kitchen table staring at her computer screen. Agent Wren Gold had asked her to write another program to help with the processing of all of the information that had been found in the newly discovered complex. She heard her front door open and looked up to see her sister Izzy coming in carrying coffee and a bag of take out for them to eat.
“I can’t believe you are still working on that,” Izzy said to her as she sat everything down on an empty corner of the table. “Did you even take a break while I was gone like you said you were going too?”
“No I didn’t. I want to get this done and I am trying to decide how to do something,” Cat answered her.
“Well, stop thinking for a few minutes and we will eat. Maybe that will give your brain the break it needs to make that decision. If after we are done eating, you still can’t make that choice, call Agent Gold and give him the options that you have and let him decide.”
“You may be right. I might ask him which way he wants me to go with it anyway. What kind of food did you get?”
“Mexican,” Izzy answered as she started carefully moving and stacking papers that were scattered across the table.
“Great, I have wanted Mexican for a week.”
“I know, you mentioned that yesterday which is why I got it. You’re my big sister and you are letting me live with you, so I am doing my best to keep you happy,” Izzy said smiling at her.
“You are always welcome in my home. You don’t give my house the same funk that Viktor and Yuri did while they were here. You also don’t complain that it is to girly because of a pink and purple pillow on the couch.”
“Which one complained about that?”
“Viktor of course,” Cat answered.
Izzy started laughing, “While I was waiting on our food I went over to his house to ask him a couple of questions about something he had seen and written a report on. When I got there, Annie was curled up on his couch with this big fuzzy pink blanket with hearts and kittens on it, watching a movie.”
“Well, that’s why it’s ok, Annie did it,” Cat laughed.
“I think it’s cute. Maybe she will make him mellow out a little. I do have to admit though; those two do make a strange couple. They are almost as strange a couple as you and Andy.”
“Do not pick on me and Andy. If you do I will invite….” Cat began when she was interrupted by a knock at her door.
She looked at Izzy who shrugged and shook her head. Cat got up from the table and walked to the door as Izzy tried to put all of the papers on the table away. Before she reached the door it opened and Viktor and Yuri walked in.
“What are you two doing here?” Cat demanded.
“Ekaterina, is that anyway to speak to your brothers?” Viktor asked as he pushed by her and walked toward the table. Cat looked at Yuri.
Yuri responded with, “Don’t look at me it was his idea to come and visit the two of you. He seems to think you’re getting into trouble somehow.”
Cat looked toward the table and saw Izzy reaching for a file just as Viktor picked it up and began to look through it. Cat and Izzy looked at each other in horror as they realized he was going to learn things he did not need to know about. Izzy grabbed it out of his hands before he read very far.
“What is that?” Viktor demanded.
“It is work that does not involve you or the sheriff’s department,” Izzy answered angrily.
“Is this why you have both been so busy? Are you both working for Agent Gold now?” Viktor asked.
“It is none of your business, and no, I do not work for Agent Gold. Is this the only reason that you two are here?” Cat asked.
“I actually came over to ask if you needed my help on anything, but obviously you don’t,” Yuri answered. “I thought if you were entering things into the data base like Izzy has been doing at the department I could help. He is the one that wants to know exactly what you are both doing,” Yuri said pointing to Viktor.
“Viktor,” Cat said calmly, “I know that you want to go into big brother mode right now but what Izzy and I are doing, you and Yuri can know nothing about. If the two of you want to know what is going on and what we are doing, you need to speak with the Sheriff and Agent Gold.”
Viktor turned and looked at Izzy. “Isabella, is there anything that you would like to add?”
“No not really. I am wondering why you are here and not with Annie, but really that is between you and her,” Izzy answered.
“There is no need to be that way. Yuri and I are here because we are worried about what you have gotten into by working with Agent Gold. He can be very dangerous and does very bad things when it suits his needs. We do not want anything to happen to either of you,” Viktor told her and Cat quietly.
“You and Yuri work for Sheriff Gold. How do you know she is not capable of the same things as her husband?” Izzy asked.
Cat took Viktor’s arm, “I think both of you need to leave so Izzy and I can do the work that we need to do,” Cat said.
Cat began to lead Viktor to the door and Yuri followed. Without another word to her brothers, she opened the door and almost pushed Viktor out onto the porch. She watched Yuri step onto the porch next to Viktor and turn and look at her. He opened his mouth as if he were about to say something then closed it after seeing the look on her face. She slammed the door and locked it. Cat turned to see her sister pulling her phone out of her pocket and dialing it.
When the phone she called was answered she began with, “Agent Gold, we may have a problem.”
