Book four of the 51 series.
Agent Wren Gold was sitting in his car in the dark. It was after midnight and he was hoping that he would be able to get some answers from what he was about to do. He watched as a man walked out of the building across from where he was parked and immediately started to move. He pulled his car in front of the man and rolled the passenger window down.
“Get in the car,” Wren told him flatly.
“I am not getting in your car,” the man laughed.
“You can either get in the car on your own, or I will put you in the car. I can assure you that it will be much more pleasant for you to get in on your own,” Wren said as he leaned over and opened the door.
“I know who you are Agent Gold.”
“Good for you. I just hope for your sake, you can give me the information I need,” Wren said as he started to drive away from the building.
“I don’t know what you want from me. I don’t know anything,” the man said nervously.
“You and I both know that is a lie.”
“I don’t know anything about what you want to know,” the man repeated.
“Maybe you just need a little help jogging your memory,” Wren said as he reached over and pushed the side of the man’s head causing it to bounce off the car window.
“Hey!” the man yelled. “So what, if I don’t tell you what you want to hear, you’re going to kill me? I have heard about you and what you do.”
“I’m not going to kill you. We are just going to have a nice drive and you are going to tell me what I need to know,” Wren answered him calmly.
“Look, I don’t know who was watching your wife and her first husband. It came from higher up and I don’t know who ordered it,” the man said.
“That is all well and good, but I never said what I needed information about. That means someone else has been talking about that too. You want to tell me who it was?” Wren asked.
“No one has been. Word has just gotten around that somehow you found out about it. “
Wren pulled the car onto one of the service roads in the national forest, parked the car, and turned off the headlights.
“Get out,” he said.
“I am not getting out in the middle of the forest. Are you crazy?” the man asked.
“You are going to do this again? Got out of the car or I will take you out of it,” Wren told him.
The man got out of Wren’s car, closed the door and stood next to it. Wren got out and walked to where the man was standing. In the distance he could hear what he and his wife referred to as her big friends. He smiled and turned toward the man he had brought there.
“I need you to tell me everything you know,” Wren said.
“Look I wasn’t part of it when all of that began. I don’t know what I can tell you,” the man said with the first hint of real fear in his voice.
“Then tell me what you do know.”
“I can’t. They told me that if I ever did, bad things would happen,” the man said.
“Really? Worse then what I am about to do to you?” Wren asked.
“You said you wouldn’t kill me,” the man stammered.
“You’re right I did say that, but I didn’t tell you what I would be doing to you,” Wren told him.
The man’s eyes grew wide as he looked at Wren. Just then one of the creatures that lived in the area let out a long low yell and this time it was very close. Wren could smell them even though there was no wind that night.
“You have a choice to make and it has to happen now. You can either tell me everything or you get to stay here and meet what lives here. Which one is it going to be?” Wren asked.
“You can’t leave me here. I have nothing I can tell you,” the man said.
“Ok. If that is what you want,” Wren said as he walked to the driver’s side of his car and got in.
Wren closed his door and locked the car. He looked at the man one more time before he turned the headlights of the car on. As soon as he did he saw a pair of eye reflecting in the light among the trees about eight feet above the ground in front of his car. He put the car in gear and backed out onto the paved road. He turned to go back toward town. After a few moments he pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed.
“Randy, I need you to have a team respond to an area south of the base immediately. I will send you the location and don’t ask questions about it. Just do a pick up. There is someone that decided to take a walk in an area they should not have,” Wren said as soon as Randy had answered the phone.
“Yes sir, I will have a team there in a few minutes,” Randy told him sounding a little sleepy.
“Thank you, Randy. I will send you a text with the exact location,” Wren said as he hung up.
He pulled to the side of the road to send the location to Randy then continued to drive. In the past few weeks he had done things that he had not done in a long time. When he had met his wife he had decided to make some changes. There were things that he had told himself he would never do again, but he had been doing again with the hopes of being able to protect his wife and her son. He just hoped she never found out what he was truly capable of doing.
